What to Check on Your Gutters After a North Texas Hailstorm

If you live in North Texas, you know that spring storm season is no joke. Between the hail, heavy rain, and high winds, your home takes a beating — and your gutters are often the first to show it. After a significant storm rolls through, it’s worth taking a few minutes to check things out before small issues turn into bigger problems.

Start With a Visual Check From the Ground

You don’t need to get on a ladder to do an initial assessment. Walk the perimeter of your home and look for obvious signs of damage — dents or dings along the gutter face, sections that look bent or pulled away from the roofline, or downspouts that appear twisted or disconnected. Hail can dent gutters pretty significantly even when it doesn’t look that severe from inside your home.

Look for Granules in Your Gutters and Downspouts

One of the telltale signs of hail damage isn’t on the gutters themselves — it’s what ends up inside them. After a storm, check your downspout drainage areas for an unusual amount of dark granules washing out. These come from your shingles and indicate roof damage that could lead to leaks affecting your gutters and fascia over time.

Check for Sagging or Separation

Heavy rain combined with hail can overwhelm gutters quickly, especially if they were already partially clogged. After a storm look for any sections that are sagging, pulling away from the fascia board, or sitting at an angle. Water pooling in sagging gutters adds weight and stress that compounds over time.

Test Your Downspouts

Run a garden hose into your gutters and watch how the water flows through the downspouts. If it’s backing up, draining slowly, or coming out in unexpected places, you may have a clog or a crack that needs attention. Storm debris like leaves, twigs, and even small branches can jam up downspouts fast.

When to Call a Professional

If you notice dents, separation, leaking seams, or anything that doesn’t look right after a storm, it’s worth having someone take a look before the next round of rain hits. In North Texas storm season that next round is usually right around the corner.
